The Orbit Big Band boasts some of the country’s top session and jazz musicians and is the pinnacle of what Johannesburg has to offer with regards to big band performance and music. Under the direction of saxophonist Janus van der Merwe, the band will each month conceptualise and explore the music and arrangements of past and present masters, artists, and arrangers. Starting off their new campaign with non other than Count Basie, one of the legends and stalwarts of Big Band era in all it’s diversity. The band will be covering 9 of the Basie Orchestra’s arrangements and compositions, spanning from its’ inception, right up to the early 80’s. The band strives to perform the vast riches of International as well as local big band composition and arrangements at the highest possible form of artistry and in doing so will leave no stone unturned. This is the real deal if you wanna talk big band.
