Mihi Matshingana is a 25-year-old up and coming jazz vocalist, lyricist and poet, currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of the Witwatersrand. Mihi grew up in East London and got her first taste of jazz in high school at the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival with the Stirling High School Jazz Band lead by Alan Webster. Prior to registering her BMus degree, she completed her BCom Financial Management degree at Stellenbosch University where the shaping of her career took place.
She began singing in Stellenbosch and Cape Town as part of the university’s jazz outreach program and performing spoken word poetry in the Western Cape poetry scene as a member of the Inzync Poetry Street Team. Inspired by her Afro-Jazz contemporaries, Mihi holds a performance and singing style that is deeply embedded in jazz and traditional musical influences.
Mihi has performed on stages in prominent venues in South Africa and in Europe. These venues include The Orbit Jazz Club, The CRYPT Jazz Restaurant, Endler Hall and at the Standard Bank National Jazz Festival to name a few. Most recently she has performed in Marcus Wyatt’s Bombshelter Beast and with Gloria Bosman at Stellenbosch University’s Women’s Day Celebration Concert in the Endler Hall. Mihi has also performed alongside many local and international performers such as Andre Petersen, Feya Faku, Zonke, Jason Rebello, Carlo Mombelli, and many more.
